Group Spiritual Direction

Some things become clearer in connection. Some journeys are better shared.

There is a richness in bringing something important from your life to a small group of people who will listen deeply, ask good questions and help you notice what may be difficult to see alone.

And while the group is listening to you, they are also listening more widely – to themselves, to one another and to God.

Over six months, the same people get to know something of your story as you get to know theirs. And between meetings, you know that others are carrying what matters to you in attention and prayer.

Small groups · Once a month • 90 minutes • £25 per session • six-month commitment

Why a group

A wider field of view

One-to-one conversation can offer extraordinary depth. A small group adds something different: several attentive people, several ways of seeing, and the possibility that somebody outside your usual world asks the question nobody else would think to ask.

You do not need a clear spiritual question.

You might bring a decision, a change, a doubt, an experience, a recurring thought, something in prayer, or simply the sense that something deserves more attention than you can give it on your own.

1
Be properly heard

Each session is carefully facilitated. For part of each gathering, the attention belongs to you. Nobody is waiting to fix you, steer you or trump your story with a better one of theirs. The group helps you stay with what matters long enough to notice more.

2
See through other eyes

Different people notice different things. Their questions and reflections can reveal assumptions, patterns and possibilities that are hard to see from inside your own life. And there are additional benefits as you help others in the same way.

3
Be held in mind

This is not a room of strangers that resets every month, the same group meets over time. People remember your story, notice what is changing, and hold what you are living with in attention and prayer.

A mixed cohort

Different lives make the group rich

You do not need to find people just like you. Someone at another life stage, in different work, with another spiritual history or a different way of seeing the world may notice something your usual circle would miss.

The aim is not agreement but the value of opinion diversity; enough trust for different perspectives to enlarge what each of us can see.

You bring your life. They bring theirs. Together, you get a wider field of view

How it works

Simple enough to be valuable

We begin with a few clear ways of working together, then let the group develop its own rhythm as trust grows. Enough structure to make it safe and enough breathing room to come alive.

Your facilitator will look after time, process and interactions so you can give your full attention to the session.

The method will evolve and the quality of attention will deepen.

01

Shared time
Everyone gets substantial time and attention over the course of each gathering.

02

Three kinds of listening
While someone speaks, we listen to them, notice what is happening in ourselves, and remain attentive to God.

03

Questions and other responses
Good questions help someone explore rather than giving advice or opinions. We will learn other ways to respond too.

04

Room to pause
Silence is available when it is useful but it's not imposed rigidly. Anyone can ask for a moment to let something settle.

05

The method can evolve
As the group develops, we may experiment with pairs, writing, walking, images, objects, shared questions or other reflective practices.
